Ol' Blood 'n' Guts' advice for new players.
General George "Ol' Blood 'n' Guts" Patton was a WWII commander that was as famous for his pithy one-liners as he was for his military victories. Let's check out some of what he said and how it applies to TAO:
"Weapons change, but man, who uses them, changes not at all. To win battles, you do not beat weapons -- you beat the spirit of the enemy man." Translation: Just because your opponent is gold, or double gold, doesn't mean he's any better of a player than someone playing the default formation. It means he spent money on TAO, that's all. Don't surrender just because you see a few advanced units -- always /stat your foe first and check out his numbers. You may very well be able to take him. "A pint of sweat will save a gallon of blood." Translation: Don't charge in all willy-nilly. Spending a few turns setting up for your attack, moving units into positions that better threaten his weaknesses, will force him to spend turns dealing with those threats rather than attacking you directly -- all the while giving you more and better offensive options. "Untutored courage is useless in the face of educated bullets." Translation: Learn the precise capacities of every unit in the game. It may be hard to kill a Pyro with a Knight and a Scout -- but it's easy with a Witch and a Scout. Without proper education in TAO, you'll never realize how many opportunities you're missing. Knowing really is half the battle! "Use steamroller strategy; that is, make up your mind on the course and direction of action, and stick to it. But in tactics, do not steamroller -- attack weakness. Hold them by the nose and kick them in the pants." Translation: Set your formation up with a very clear plan of what you intend the game to flow like. Then, when you see your opponent's set, gank him with the most effective maneuvers possible while sticking to your formation's goal as closely as makes sense given the actual flow of the battle. "There's one thing you men can say when it's all over and you're home once more. You can thank God that twenty years from now when you're sitting by the fireside with your grandson on your knee, and he asks you what you did in the war, you won't have to shift him to your other knee, cough, and say 'Well son...I shoveled crap in Louisiana.' " Translation: Spend the money, and get Gold! Seriously, it's less than a third the cost of a new X360 game, and it's not just getting you some pimp units -- it's supporting one of the best browser-based games on the Internet. Just do it!
