When I set my avatar on an empty board I always pick the bottom. I think it's because I feel closer to my units. I mean, in all other board games you are oriented behind your pieces/base/whatever.
That being said, it's not a big deal for me. I've played on both sides enough times that as soon as the match starts I can reorient myself as needed. Same with setting up trash vs away from trash. |

I always play from the top as well, or at least try to.
It's based on whether you like having your units facing the same was as you're facing the computer monitor, and having their lefts be your left, and etc. or having the units be opposite.

Top. I started off that way, and I've pretty much stayed that way ever since. I feel like I can see everything better and that I'm "coming down" on my opponent as if down a hill. It's always easier to run down than up.
I don't know, it all sounded good in my head
