Mind if I hijack this forum to discuss TAO Rankings improvements? I consider it part of TAO more than I consider it part of the forums. And I don't want to inundate the "On Topic" forum with TAO Rankings suggestions. Typically I prefer to hear suggestions via PM, but for large projects such as this, I prefer public discussion.
We've got the Player Rankings system, and it's pretty neat since it includes everybody and has those nifty options. But I want something more intimate. I want something like the grandfather of all tournaments. There's plenty of us who loves tournaments. Tournaments are a true test of skill. It's better than counting up your wins and losses. It's better than stats. It's also more competitive. But it takes a lot of effort to organize and recruit for a tournament. Then you gotta worry about scheduling games and people being active... All of this inspired me to create a ladder system that has some of the qualities of a tournament. Here's what I'm thinking. First, to sign up to the ladder "tournament" you enter a bot command in the lobby. For example I might call this command "!ladder". After typing the command, you will be added to the bottom of the ladder. Here's the ladder tournament rules as I have thought up so far. This is inspired by the "ItsYourTurn.com" ladder system where I used to play chess and checkers. 1) If you win against somebody who is higher on the ladder than you by at most 10 positions or 20% of the total number of ladder players (whichever is higher), then you will take his place and bump everybody down. Likewise, if you lose to somebody lower than you, then you will drop by 1 position. 2) If you win against somebody who is lower on the ladder than you by at most 10 positions or 20% of the total number of ladder players (whichever is higher), then you will move up the ladder by 1 position. Likewise if you lose to somebody higher up on the ladder than you, you don't move anywhere. 3) If you do not login to the game at all for a whole month then you will be dropped from the ladder. You may then !ladder yourself and start over at the bottom. Only active players will be part of this ladder rankings system. 4) You must have at least 1200 stats to join the ladder. If you drop below 1200 stats then you will be booted from the ladder. This is to protect ladder players from stat rapers. This was also requested by several people. I'll be adding to the tao player the ability to list all of the ladder players that can be played to increase your rank and whether or not they are online. There will be separate gray and gold ladders. Golds will not be allowed to join the gray ladder, but brave grays will be allowed to pit themselves against golds on the gold ladder. Alright people. I want to hear your comments. Does this sound fun? Does this sound fair? Got any better ideas for a ladder rankings system? Last edited by BrutalRage; 05-16-2008 at 03:18 AM. |

I have certainly put thought toward expanding the tao player I released to include the ability to list the online ladder players.

Sounds well, but point 3) should be like: if you dont play a ladder game for (amount of time) then...
Because otherwise No1 would not play ladder games anymore...

Are you saying that there is a problem with somebody taking the #1 spot and not playing any more ladder games? That's covered by #2 making sure they fall down on the ladder if they stop playing ladder games. They can still be on the ladder, but they will slowly drop and drop and drop.

The system seems to encourage picking ppl to play rather than accepting all challeges. What about only games with ppl 5 ranks above and below you counts? Obviously a different number can be discussed.
Pros: Prevents someone at the bottom getting a game from #1, wins by luck and jump up. Players are less likely to avoid games to look for only opponents above them or opponents below that they know they can beat. Less swings in the ranking (don't see someone move from hte bottom to top in one game). Not really any cons :P my 2 cent |

How exactly do you plan doing this? If two people who signed up play a game, it automatically counts as a ladder game? Or would there be some kind of external system where would you report a game, which has to be agreed between two players.
Anyways, I dislike a player winning once and taking the loser's place. I like Solingro's idea, but 5 is a bit too low, unless there's like 30-50 players on the ladder. How about you 10% of people below and above you? |
