Plastic Surgery: fountain of youth or river of lies

Not that there is anything wrong with plastic surgery, its about time we faced the truth. And that truth is nothing will last forever. Its amazing to see so many people value the beauty of their body more than they value themselves as a person. And I think that is partly due to the way society generally idolizes the body in the way it should the heart, as though it were the most intricate detail in a universal mural of the human world. The most common reason people have for ps is because they do not like themselves as they are, therefore they must become something they're not. So in a sense it is the fountain of youth and the a river of lies at the same time. Well that's my view on plastic surgery (and I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it). Well thanks for reading.

One might look at anything that people do in the same way as you view plastic surgery:

Why do people achieve advanced education?

They don't like themselves as they are (uneducated and with low potential) and try to become something they're not (educated higher-wage earners).

There's nothing wrong with wanting to become something you're not. It's kind of how our economic system is driven.

There is a difference between becoming someone who you are not, and becoming someone better.

Become someone who you are not, like all the kids in High School, is pure FAIL. Now, making some better of yourself is probably the best thing you can do.

Who is anybody to say what is better for someone else? We can only really make judgements about our own life and our own choices.

If it makes them genuinely happy and less self conscious about themselves, they should do it. We all have things about ourselves that we dislike but for some people it's unbearable.

I dont think I ever mentioned someone else judging how better one is.

Nice try at an all encompassing compassionate view. But you forgot things like surgery for the purposes of reconstruction after a disfiguring injury, someone being born with a disfigurement (only one breast etc) or any reason whysomeone may wish for surgery to put something right again rather then make something better out of vanity.

What about old people who just want to look like they did when they were younger again? There are people who have plastic surgery who don't want to just look like barbie dolls and destroy everything about themselves in the interests of "beauty", in fact such cases are very very rare, they are just publicised when they do happen so you hear more about it due to the fact the people in question need to be incredibly wealthy and so are usually celebrities. You watch too much MTV if you ask me.

I remember watching a program on TV a long long time ago about a child who was born with a face that looked different to all the other kids at school. Because of this they called him "Demon Child" and stoned him almost to death in the streets. His family risked starvation to save up all their earnings for 6 months to go to a Plastic Surgeon in America to help him look like "someone he is not like all the kids in High School". Is that pure FAIL?

QFT. Why should those people be forced to be unhappy when there is an alternative out there?

Who are you, Horizon, to judge them? You say you're not, but your tone clearly is biased against it. I'd rant and rave and give facts and figures, but I doubt you're worth the hassle.

No, the surgery helped him look "normal (whatever that is)," physically not mentally.

See, when Hrundi said, "There's nothing wrong with wanting to become something you're not" I thought of someone who acts, thinks, does things in order to fit in, meaning he changed his own personality just to be like everyone else.

Gypsy is an unknown quantity at this point
I found it very hard to take this thread seriously after reading the title.

You should be able to do whatever you want to do. Don't look down on "vain" people, I'm sure they could find a reason to look down on you. >_>
