Well since I started the creation of my C++ MMORPG I have been searching around for a good 3d Modeling program for my Maps and Characters and what not. I found this program called blender:

And I have seen the wonders this program can do. Look at this amazingly awesome short movie created with blender only and some sound and audio devices. But this program is simply amazing. To have an animated short this amazing and graphical takes a lot of time and work.

This is an open source program as well, and each and every detail put into this animated short is genius. I recommend you watch it along with their other production. It's really awesome, at least from my perspective. Watch it and tell me these guys aren't talented. It must of took quite awhile. Each and every feature is again brilliant.

Blender is by far the best 3d program you can get for free. it was originally designed to be a purchased software but the company that designed didn't have the right licenses to market the program so they made it available for free.

but, if you happen to have $3000+ lying around i would recommend you get 3ds Max instead. 3ds Max is a much more professional program than blender. 3ds max is what the major movies are done in except for Disney Pixar. they created their own animation program for their films.

mmm yea Big Buck Bunny was all over the blogs a few months ago when it came out as a blender foundation film.

Blender is the go-to app for free 3D rendering, or anything amateur with no budget. Its development was stalled for a while but has picked up a bit again. The high res download of big buck bunny (300mb torrent) looked really nice, with the added textures and such they put in the vid and of course the big yet soft bunny (Giants) ended up beating the tough little critters (Patriots) in the end.

lol dan, there is NO beating pixar animation studios - Wall-E, shrek, toy story from back in the day, etc...Nemo would be proud. Blender is the best you can get free hands down, course it bugged out on me when i tried it out on my ubuntu partition.....bleh..

I agree with Dan that 3d Studio Max is a big project and it is Amazing. I myself have tested an used it. But if you are pretty tight on budget as Flash said, you can't make Blender better than it already is without having to purchase it.

I can't wait till the next release, they are supposed to have a C++/Python IDE amongst the studio

i miss max. my sophomore year of high school i took 3d animation and we were using 3ds max 5. about 2 years ago i got the trial of 3ds max 8 and played with it for about a month and made a few vids and advertisements for my mothers business. i miss 3ds max...
