I don't particularly pay too much attention to the US elections, at least not more than I need to. I read on MSNBC, about a comment a former candidate (and currently a member of Clinton's campaign) said. It was quite hilarious in my point of view, and quite absurd.
Geraldine Ferraro stated the following: "If Obama was a White man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept." A big LOL ensued after I read that. I honestly couldn't believe what I had just read. Ferraro obviously has no clue what she is talking about. Did she sleep during all her American history classes? Has she not seen the history of Black people in America? I certainly disagree with her statement, as it is quite the opposite. Than again, this whole election is the opposite of what is normally seen. A Black man and a White woman are head to head down the stretch. Wait, what? Going back to Ferraro needing a history lesson, last time I checked, a Black person nor a woman has ever been President. I certainly fail to see what the context of Ferraro's statement possessed, as neither candidate has an advantage. Maybe times have changed, though. Maybe America is ready for a Black or female President. Regardless, I think the comment made could possibly be a turning point. It has a negative vibe which could affect Clinton's final push. At the same time, Obama's party could mention that Hilary is only as well known as she is (and as successful) because she was an ex-first lady and was plastered all over the news due to her husband cheating. Wow, that’s certainly a fine resume to success *claps*. Now, I know the majority of forum members are American. Yet, anyone can really put their two cents in on this matter. Thoughts on how this could affect both candidates? |

Well I think she meant that the only reason Obama has a chance at winning this election is because he's black. What I find is ironic, is that the same could be said with Hilary. She's a women, and an ex-first lady (I think that's what it is), and the whole Bill Clinton thing seems to be working in her favour. I just find that statement to be pretty ironic.
![]() Oh, and I doubt it will affect much, just like I don't find the ad that Obama made to respond to Clinton's ad to have that much effect either. I guess I just hope that somebody's vote can't be swayed that easily. Last edited by Hawk; 03-14-2008 at 07:40 AM. |

A fine example of the stupidity of her comment, are people like Martin Luther King Jr.
Yes, it was a different era, but reflects upon the matter. I simply find Ferraro's statement a parody of the woman she is leading. Yet, it is a fine example of when to keep your mouth shut, and when to take a shot at your opponent which doesn't make you look like a tool. True, might not have a huge effect, but was unnecessary on terms a replica response can be projected on Hilary, as we both mentioned. Last edited by Nec; 03-14-2008 at 07:43 AM. |

Hmm, this made me think, does anyone here think that if Martin Luther king was never assassinated, he may have become president? Eh, just some thought. =P
Anyways, there is some truth in that statement, alot of noobs are voting for Obama simply for the fact that he is black. Don't get me wrong, I think he'd make a good president, but people are supporting him for the wrong reasons.

That comment is actually somewhat true. Just look at the numbers: Barack has an OVERWHELMING amount of black voters (80+% I believe), which has helped him win most all souther states (other than Florida, which was removed, but which also has a high mexican/hispanic population). Just like Hillary gets some Women's votes, but not as many, because some women still disagree with her.
