It's funny, I was ahead of the third biggest poster (Flash Demon) by 1000 posts. Now I see Phoenix has more posts than me now. Have you spend 8 hours a day here man? :S

As much as I really didn't wanna make this thread, I can't answer several PM's and >10 IM's per day asking where I'm going and how long for and wanting all the details. So I'm making this to explain.

At 7am GMT 9th June 2007, I shall depart from Leeds, England, and travel north for 12 hours to a place south of Inchnadamph, Scottish Highlands, Scotland.



Decipher that image for yourselves. Put it this way - Inverness (google it) is the nearest city and supermarket, and our nearest bank or shop is 90 minutes away.

I'm going there for two weeks. I shall be back on 24th June. Mark that in your calendars!

I'm going with university as a compulsory part of my second year course. It involves extensive geological mapping of an area appx 1 square mile over two weeks, of an area of geology that includes the Moine Thrust(The Wiki entry was even written by my lecturer). Not exactly easy. Infact, highly complex. The most complex geology in the United Kingdom. Particularly Ben More Assynt.

You can see why I'd not look forward to it already, right?

Well there is no mobile phone reception. Unless you hike 40-90 minutes up a mountain. And even then, it's not guaranteed. There is no internet. My hostel, infact, is the only building in the valley. There are 7 showers between 51 people. We have to buy/cook our own food, inbetween our working day of 8am departure-6pm return. We're then expected to work for 3 hours of an evening. One day we have a boat trip, so have a 7am departure. So that's an hour earlier to get up at (takes an hour to get prepped, eat, get changed etc). The nearest building other than that is a hotel one valley over with a small bar. There is no other form of entertainment other than a small CD player in the hostel. One player between 51 people won't be fun to share.

That's bad, right? Okay, now add that it's midge , tick and mosquito breeding season up there. And then you'll see the bigger picture. It will be cold, wet and very windy most of the trip. Bugs hate that. So do we. The first 4 days are to be hot and sunny though. They love that. We must wear long trousers because ticks crawl up your legs and suck blood from your geintals (men and women!), because it's the warmest, moistest place they can find. They'll suck blood for around 5 days, then drop off. You have to use a special tool to remove them. They also carry the potentially dangerous Lyme Disease. Not fun.

After all of that, we still have to actually write up two reports, and give two oral presentations on our maps. Plus, draw the maps from scratch. Plus the map itself, and our field notes.

To cap it all off, I cannot train for three weeks, so my fitness will plummet. I cannot attend any of the three tournaments I'd planned to attend. I have to pay £110 for this trip. I'd already pre-paid £30 for one tourney. Which I've not lost, obviously. So there's £140 down the drain for a trip I don't even want.

All in all, I'm dreading it. But this should at least explain my custom user title, and why I've been a bit down for the past few weeks.

Sounds kinda boring since you can't do anything fun. It's only for two weeks though so it can't be that bad. It's gonna be boring here to without you.
