The hoplite is a well-trained infantryman armed with a long spear and shield. They are renowned for their ability to form a phalanx, a wall bristling with spears that is virtually impossible to attack head on. Their strength lies in defense, a line of these warriors can defend from a head-on assault pretty much indefinitely. However, if their flank is turned, the rigidity of their formation can cause the whole line to collapse.
Hoplite Human Warrior HP: 44 Power: 20 Armor: 18 Movement range: 3 (1 while in phalanx formation) +80% blocking +1 turn recovery +Clumsy +Phalanx +Long Spear The Hoplite's attack pattern is identical to the Beast Rider, but without the piercing effect. Line of Sight applies in a similar way to the dragon (ie. you cannot hit a unit 2 spaces away if a unit is standing in front of you). Clumsy: The encumbering nature of the long spear and heavy shield means that the hoplite cannot react quickly to a flanking foe. The hoplite has 0% blocking from the sides as well as the rear. Phalanx: The Hoplite is dangerous in individual combat, but its true effectiveness is only shown when working with other hoplites to protect each other. A Hoplite that is adjacent to another friendly Hoplite and facing in the same direction is considered to be in a phalanx formation. While in this formation, all hoplites in the phalanx move and attack as a single unit, all at the same time. Only hoplites join a phalanx. If any enemy unit is standing directly adjacent to the side or rear of any member of a phalanx formation, or if any member of the hoplite formation is paralysed or poisoned, the formation will be disrupted. All phalanx bonuses and penalties are lost until the hoplites are all facing in the same direction and the enemy unit is no longer on the flank or rear of any member of the phalanx, or the focus spell effect is removed, whichever is applicable. While in phalanx formation, the hoplites may only move 1 space and only in the direction the line is facing, otherwise their careful formation will be disrupted. A hoplite can move 2 or 3 spaces while in phalanx formation, but the other members of the phalanx will not move with it. Long Spear: The Hoplite's standard mode is a defensive one, often kneeling with his spear set when not moving. Any unit which attempts to move through both spaces directly ahead of the hoplite (in effect, a head-on charge) will automatically take a power 20 attack, which is unblockable as the unit is concentrating on charging. This does not apply to teleporting units, as they do not pass through both defended spaces. This unit is a double gold unit. All double golds will be given 3 of them. They are limited to 3 on the field. They are not a drop unit. Common tactics: Field them in a straight line in any position you feel the enemy is likely to attack in numbers. Use other units (knights, assassins, scouts) to cover their flanks as they slowly advance, cutting down anything in their path. Watch out for teleporting units that can go straight past the line, disrupt the formation and hit the hoplites from behind. Useful to start with the hoplites in a 3-wide phalanx directly ahead of the cleric; on the first turn, advance all 3 of them and strike 3 enemy units, blocking all access to the cleric for the Ambusher at the same time. for clarity, they only form Phalanx with the other Hoplites ?
the way it is worded leads me to believe it could be any unit... which makes it very, very powerful on one hand, and very weak to flanking on the other, as you can't ever really guard the flanks well. Very cool, and a nice change from the average unit.

Only Hoplites can form a phalanx formation, as no other unit is trained in the ancient mode of warfare. However, other units may be used to guard the flanks of the phalanx; they won't gain any advantage themselves, but they will help protect the phalanx formation.

ok, I was hoping thats how it worked... very, very cool. I have been wondering for awhile about formations and how they would work, well done!!
I nominate for Great Unit , it is simple, effective, for the most part balanced, and it would bring a new dimension to games. Everything a Great Unit needs.

They should probably count against the number of Knights on the field. Then again, having 6 80% blockers on the field might shake things up a bit...
