It indeed saves gas as you can choose to drive on a higher gear if you don't need the strength of a lower one and use less RPM.

As for more fun. If you are racing, definitely. Now, if you are just trying to get through traffic in the big city, then it can become cumbersome to go over the cycle:
Red light:
- Press on the breaks
- Down-shift to neutral
Green light:
- Press the clutch
- Shift to first
- Release clutch while pressing the gas pedal
- Shift to second
Red light:
(repeat >_<)

Not to say that if you do something wrong in any of the above, the car will turn off, and major head-turning will ensue.

There is also driving on steep hills, which may involve using your parking break so that you don't hit the car behind you when you first starting to move forward.

Luckily, the driving instructor I had did a good job teaching me all the techniques (he had it down to a science), I was also driving my father's car, which he bought from the army before retiring, which was very sweet:

(The picture above is from Wikipedia. My dad's car had a bit more wear and tear, but after the paint job, it ended up close to the picture, I'll surely miss driving it ).

So if you ever need some tips, let me know ;)

You like literally explained how to drive manual. That's cool. If I ever wanna learn how to drive it, then I'll look at your post.

Oh yeah that turning off thing, I've experienced that. My cousin had a Mitsubishi Eclipse manual, and sometimes when he messed up the car would turn off, I was like what the hell and then he explained to me that he messed up the gear shift.

Like the life of them. Actually no. If you drive it right,a manual should out last any automatic...

This is actually an interesting point.

A manual will go bad if the driver is not doing things right. If you overuse the clutch or just like pushing the car too hard (e.g. you CAN actually hit the reds in RPM if you are driving manual, you'll accelerate faster but you WILL suffer the consequences).

It can also be something silly, like accelerating without realizing that you are still in neutral (Bottle pointed out that driving a stick becomes second nature yes, but however, that comes at the price of no longer carefully thinking of what you are doing). One of those misses, you pass the reds, and there goes your engine, and basically your car.

With an automatic, that will never happen since the gas pedal will be programmed to "behave" with the engine.

I guess that if you know how to drive manual, then that choice is best and more fun. Now, if you just THINK you can drive manual, be safe and use automatic.

I drive a manual car, and trust me, it is impossible to over-rev the car unless you are driving irresponsibly. And if you are driving irresponsbly, you shouldn't be driving at all, manual OR automatic.

Aye. I drive my motorcycle and it is like second nature to grab the clutch in, and switft up on the shifter...

I do it by sound when I am driving fast. Faster RPM's make a higher toned rev...so when it gets to high. Shift, and it goes back down. Easy as that...

But motorcycles are different the cars, you can drive a motorcycle longer in higher RPM than a car and not really have to worry about engine damage...
