American Issues: Gun Control

Post smart, have fun.

Anyway...

A well regulated militia being necessary for the welfare of the state, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

a) The 2nd Amendment is out of date. When it was made, muskets were the only form of firearm and the United States was fighting for its right to exist. We don't need any musket toting militias running around extracting vigilante justice anymore, we have an effecient legal system. Free access to guns breeds crime and allows unstable individuals to more easily take out their anger on the world around them. Only give out guns to the police, and implant guns with RFID chips to know where they are at all times. Persons wishing to buy a gun should have to undergo a background check.

b) Regardless of whether the amendment is out of date, the Constitution is the Constitution. As of right now, it is what is is and we can't change it. If people want to walk into a store and buy any gun, they can. Americans should be able to protect their lives and those of their loved ones from dangerous individuals. These individuals are going to get a gun no matter what, and the best way to stop them isn't to rely on a police force. At a certain point action needs to be taken, and allowing Americans to buy guns gives them the freedom to take that action.

c) Shotguns and other nonconcealable weapons aren't a problem. The problem, rather, is handguns and other concealable weapons. America isn't as safe a place of someone walking down the street could have a handgun in their pocket ready to start firing away. You can't hide an assault rifle/shotgun/whatever. If someone has one of those they can't keep in their pocket, people know to get out of the way. But access to concealable weapons is unsafe as any crackpot could get one and start shooting up the street. This is evidenced by school shootings around the country. Concealable weapons should be outlawed unless you undergo a background check and register it, nonconcealable weapons should be able to be bought in a store.

As you may have guessed, the above views are various stances on gun control. These aren't all of the stances, nor are these stances complete. Most of the issues America is facing today--indeed all of them, all the time--are much more complex than one forum posts. That's why they're issues instead of bumps in the road of nationhood. The goal of this thread is to have an intelligent, thoughtful discussion. I didn't see any threads about gun control on the first page or so of these forums, so I decided to make one. Other issues may soon follow, who knows?

Anywho, discuss your stance and why, follow the above rules.
